Preparation for Protection of Stored Items

Furniture: Give your wood furniture a good coating of polish before storing it. Disassemble as much furniture as possible (table legs, etc). Wrap disassembled pieces with pads. Tape the pieces together if possible. This will save you on space and help to protect your furniture.

Mattresses: Place mattresses in mattress bags (available in our office) or wrap in heavy plastic. When placing upholstered items or bedding in your space, use pallets or pieces of wood to avoid contact with concrete or metal.

Books: Do not put too many books in one box. Pack books flat as standing them on end may cause damage to their spines.

Clothing: Do not put mothballs in your boxes. This may result in staining of your clothes. Use wardrobe boxes for better clothing. They can be used again for off-season clothing.

Photographs: Place photos flat, between cardboard or in books, to avoid curling in time. We do not recommend storing irreplaceable photos in your storage space.

Engines: It's the law and for your own protection to drain all oil and fuel from any engines before they are put in your storage space.

Packing Your Self Storage Space for
Maximum Convenience And Use of Space

The Height: Stand large pieces on furniture on end or on top of each other but only if furniture is safe and secure. Take advantage of the extra height in our spaces. All of our units are 9'6" and 10' in height, which gives you 11% more space than the average storage facility.

The Weight: Store heavier items on the bottom. Label your boxes on 3 sides so they can be read without having to move them.

The Ventilation: For better ventilation, always leave a couple of inches of space between the walls and your belongings to allow air to flow freely.

Packing Your Space for the Security of the Contents

Insurance is available in the office. The goods you place in self storage spaces are the sole responsibility of you, their owner. Goods are not insured by the storage facility. If the space is for business use, check with your company's insurance provider to see if your coverage already has a provision for items stored off company property. You may already be covered.

Never store live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids or fuels, toxic material and other items that need a controlled environment. Common sense and state laws determine what may be stored. Disconnect the battery cables to your equipment.

  • Never store food other than canned goods in your space. Food attracts pests.
  • Use your own lock or purchase one from the office. Make no duplicate keys except for your personal use.
  • Store small expensive items (stereos, TVs, etc.) in the back of the storage space in coded boxes, putting larger furniture or other boxes in front of them.
  • Wrap glasses and other breakable items in bubble wrap, available in the office. Store breakables with the linens for extra protection.
  • It's a good idea to place boxes on pallets to allow air to circulate under and around them. Try not to stack them too high. You can place boxes on top of dressers and appliances.
  • To minimize the dust damage, wrap electronics and furniture in linens or place drop cloths on your things. (tape is available in the office)
  • Create an aisle down the center of your space for easy access to your items.
  • Avoid storing items such as glass water filled globes during the winter (freezing will cause them to burst becoming a mess when they thaw). Also, avoid storing items that melt easily such as candles during the hotter months. Common sense should prevail here.
  • List all goods stored, including brand names, product features and serial numbers. Keep the list in a safe place away from your storage space. You may also want to keep proof of purchase documentation in case you need to prove ownership. Make a video tape or photograph of your stored goods for your records.
  • If you have a concern or a question, our friendly, professional staff will be happy to help you in any way we can. We sell boxes, locks, tape, specialty boxes, furniture and mattress protective bags, markers, gloves, rope, insurance and other packing item in the managers' office.
